This is the final post of this class.

I learned a lot from this class.

1. Research

Research is a powerful tool that i learned from this class. Through research, I can find history of the the topics, i can find out what others have done regarding to the topics, i can collect all the information regarding to the topics. All these information together will be a ground that my understanding of the topic can stand on.

The acuracy of the research data. There are different places that research can be done. Internet resources, scholorly database. It does not matter which resource the data is coming from, proof of acuracy is still very important. Schorlary database relative more reliable resources at this moment.

2. Peer review

In my classroom, we have over 30 students, and over 40% of them are from differnt countries outside of US. They are in the age arrange from 20 to 60, evenly distributed male and female ratial. Most of them are passionate to multi media as they choose this field as their master degree field. Classmates and teacher are the best resources for reviewing my work.

Because of the diversity of the class, students feedback are very diversify. It is a great chance to learn from them about their perspective. Thanks to my classmates and teachers’ feedback during this class. The feedback lights up my path of research and predict the future.

3. It is changing my way of looking at technology and life

Predict the future of the technology is such an interesting topic and challenge topic. From what i learned in the classroom, i am able to predict the future with solid research data as ground. The future is becoming more clear after the presentation. I am very confident to my prediction in terms of cell phone’s future.

Mean while the thinking path to predict the future become one of the perspective that i use to see other technology. In my daily work when we work on the product, i am able to thinking further and design features and architect the design fotowards the direction of future. This helps a lot to my work. I appreciate this opportunity of learning.

Last Tuesday i gave my classmates the presenation of Why say yes to high tech.

It was a reflection to an article i read. Because my research topic is about Cell Phone, so i chose a topic related to cell phone.

The presentation went smoothly thanks to my classmates participations.

The research in the article is about Mobile TV. Then i thought, would be good to related to my classmates. This way i can hear their opinion about cell phone. My classmates are a group of young active high educated group, they are from different tregions and countries (China, TaiWan, Mexico, different area in USA). Because of this program is an advanced area in Communication with Digital Media, most of the classmates are high tech oriented, they are passionate about technology, they are passionate about social media, they are passionate about what media and technology can do for them. The answers i got from them is very representative of will people say yes to Mobile TV here in America and other countries and regions?

I am amazed to see how expressive my classmates are. They activelly participated, answered questions, asked questions that they are interested. Their answers tell me, Mobile TV is not ready here yet.

The presentation and discussion was a reproduction of the research in the article here in the classroom.

I also pointed out the TAM the well used method to my classmates. As it is the classic method and very useful, I would like to share with the class, so that they leave the discussion with some take away that could benefit their life.

I love the discussion, it is a great way to know people and communicate between each other and share ideas with each other.

Looking forward to have more chance like this.

GOAL:

Introduce my class mates the well used TAM (Techonolgy Acceptance Model)

And use this TAM in our daily life

Strategy:

Before intro the term TAM, ask audience questions that related to their daily life. What feature do you really want on your cell phone? Why? This is an easy question for everyone, so i expect to get lots of cool feature ideas and good reasons.

With this ideas and reasons, i summarize them into the TAM terminology: PU, PEOU and Intenion of Usage and together we will make a theory.

This is a process of using this theory from the opposite direction: intent to use and why. This direction encouraging the natuwhy-say-yesral thinking flow to discover the theory.

Then i will reveal the TAM to my audience. They will feel really good that they are the person that already apply the theory in life.

Then i will reveal what this study is done to extend the TAM.

In the end of the presentation, i will encourage my audience, how to use this theory and learning from the study to apply to our daily life.

The PPT:

If you are a consumer, what makes you decide if you want to adopt the technology such as Mobile TV? If you are a mobile service provider, how would you attract more adopters? With these basic questions, the study was done in Korea with about 200 questionnaires survey.

The conclusion made from this study is beyond the well used TAM theory, there are two other factors impact the intention of use. These two actores are: Perceived Concentration and Content. In this article, this study extended the well used TAM.

This is traditional TAM:

This is the extended TAM from this study:

H1: Perceived usefulness (PU) will positively affect a consumer’s intention to use mobile TV.

H2: Perceived ease of use (PEOU) will positively affect a consumers’ intention to use mobile TV.

H3: Perceived ease of use (PEOU) will positively affect perceived usefulness.

H4: Cognitive concentration will positively affect perceived usefulness.

H5: Cognitive concentration will positively affect perceived ease of use.

The most influential antecedent of flow experience is content

H6: Content will positively affect consumer’s cognitive concentration.

H7: Content will positively affect consumer’s perceived usefulness.

PU has a highly significant influence on INT (b = .64, p = .01). PEOU slightly affects INT (b = .17, p = .05) but it has no influence on PU. CON has a significant influence on PU(b = .34, p = .01) and PEOU (b = .26, p = .01). Finally, the results show that content (CONT) has strongly significant explanatory power. CONT has a significant influence on CON (b = .54, p = .01) and PU (b = .38, p = .01) (see Fig. 2).

Terminology introduced in this article:

Hedonic information technology – entertainment-centric information technology (IT)

Technology acceptance model (TAM)

The TAM theorizes that an individual’s behavioral intention to accept a technology depends on two beliefs: perceived usefulness(PU), defined as the extent to which a person believes that using the technology will enhance his or her job performance, and perceived ease of use (PEOU), defined as the extent which a person believes that using the technology will be free of effort.

PU = Perceived usefulness;

PEOU = Perceived ease of Use;

CON = Concentration;

CONT = Content;

INT = Intention to Use.

Cognitive concentration: ‘‘the holistic sensations that people feel when they act with total involvement

basic areas of cognition (e.g., attention, memory, spatial cognition, reading, human factors) – or flow experience)

Mobile TV service refers to the digital video broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H), and the digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB).

Scope of the research: Mobile TV in Korean market collect 208 survey questionnaires are collected.

The best Noval award was given to Rainbows End byVernor Vinge.

Rainbows End, By Vernor Vinge, Published by Macmillan, 2006, ISBN 0312856849, 9780312856847, 364 pages

It is a science fiction. It is revealing the technology of not so far away future.

The theme of tis book is focusing on the transition period between today and the Singularity. Vinge explores both the benefits and disadvangages to society from this technological change. The Singularity is becomming smarter than human. The concept of security in such an increasingly digital/virtual workd is another part of theme of this novel.

Vinge painted the augmented reality that humans interacting with virtual overlays of realities any time by wearing smart clothing and contact lenses that can over and reproduce what the eye could see with computer graphics. This augmentation of reality is demonstrated in different ways:

Communication:

People in his book communicate through the silent message called: sming.

Wearables and authentication procedures can be corrupted, allowing someone to assume control of the digital version of another person. As result, the risk exists that the digital version of the person with whom you are dealing may not acturally be that person. Or they may have assumed an entirely different persona, not revealing who they really are.

Biotech:

Modern medicine could reborn aged human, but their gifts are some soft of lost.

Security:

Vinge believes Secure hardware environment is the reliabile foundation of everything online and virtual.

Learning/Education:

Generations of learning, acting and interacting in the digital data workd becoming more proficient and innovative. What can be a patent winning idea could be as good as a high school grade.

Overall this is a fiction book that provides lots of intersting imaginations of near future developed by advanced technology. But it is just a tool to explore the consequences if technological and social choices that we face today.

Here Comes Everybody – book review

I read Shirky, Clay’s book Here comes everybody: the power of organizing without organizations. Publish by Penguin Press in New York in 2008.

The audience is Shirky’s main motivation of writing this book. In the past he focused on writing to engineering, technical leaders. To the point he realized that internet become the general awareness of the social audiences. He saw the differences between society that has internet and society does not. He wrote this book to focus on the general audience.

The thesis of this book is we are living through the largest increase in human expressive capability in history. Shirky stated that there were only 4 broad period of innovation in history that can compete with what is happening today. Those 4 revolutions are: Printing press of moving type; Telegraph, telephone, Recorded media of all types: sound, picture, moving image with sound and harness of broadcast.

Another part of the thesis of this book is once the technology is soak deep in the culture, the social effects are build on top of it and simultaneously require the technology and are not about technology. We are at the internal combustion of the internet.

Today’s revolution is not just the 5th innovation; it also holds the last 4 innovations. It moves us to the world of 2 way groups. The result of the innovation is: Group action just got easier.

Groups get complicated faster than they get larger. Hiyraky is a traditional way to keep the group and still keep the connection more effective. Today we see set of tools to make each one of the links very easy to produce. As a result we see large groups that relative light weight. This is called ridiculously easy group forming. These tools are: internet, email, communication groups, and social groups that are popular on the internet today.

 Picture of group and connections:

Internet makes the group action easier. Internet impacts communications by creating ridiculously easy group forming. And it improves all these areas: sharing, conversation, collaboration and Collective action.

How does internet impact Sharing?

Sharing is now becoming a platform for collaboration instead of vice versa. Traditional sharing happened after the group forming. And now, sharing is happened before group forming. People discovered the group after they share their resources. For example, on flickr.com site, photographers share their pictures and tag them the name of the events. And by query search the tags they discovered other authors who has the same topic contents shared on flickr.com. This is revolution is well accepted by community groups today.

How does internet impact conversation, collaboration?

From sharing to conversation to collaboration, each stage requires more level of communication involvement. Conversation over internet, people come together and learn together. It took only 3 months for the experts to share his technique with the audiences which were 8 years of work in the past. Internet becomes platform of the conversations and collaborations.

Why Winston write this book?

In his introduction he explained how society impacts technology.

He argues societal (particularly economic) forces determine the effects, uses, acceptance and even the arrival of new forms of communication.

How does he present his arguments?

He did close and detailed examination he provides of the early development of electronic communication. He uses example how telegraphy was invented in 1844 consider it was 4 years after a message announcing that Queen Victoria had given birth traveled on a telegraph wire, and it was 19 years after a design of electric means sending messages over wires. By analyzing the electronic telegraph’s “invention”, he explains how the sociality impacts the “invention” of new technology.
